"Amazing!"
My stay at the Sheraton Gunter hotel was awesome! Gabe the front desk manager knows how to provide amazing customer service! Every employee I interacted with very friendly and helpful. Hotel was clean, the pool is in a nice secluded spot and the gym is very spacious. I would love to come back to this hotel the next time I am in San Antonio!
"Nice hotel - Great Location - Great Service"
This is a really nice hotel. Although is an old hotel, has been really nice updated. It is less than one block front the canal and with all kind of restaurants and things to do all around. Customer service was really nice and very courteous. Even gave us advice in where to go and where to park. My advice is not to park at the hotel. The parking is $31 per night. You can part in the City parking across the street for $5 the day!
"The bed was great"
I had such a great sleep here the mattress was just right and so were the pillows. It's the first time I didn't turn the TV on to help me to sleep. As I'm a Starwood guest I had a great room with free bottled water, shower was good and everything else was just right. Staff were great.
I would love to stay here again
"Loved this historic hotel!"
We stayed three nights at the Sheraton. Had absolutely no problems checking in. The lobby is gorgeous!! Went up the elevator and went to our room. Yes, this is a historic building and therefore the rooms are smaller but I felt like we had plenty of room. There is a closet for your luggage and the room had a little table with a coffee maker, a desk and chair and nightstands next to the bed. The bathroom is smaller than ones in newer hotels but was definitely big enough to take a shower and put on your makeup and fix your hair. There was even a full length mirror and a lot of newer hotels don't always have that. The room was very clean and trust me, I looked because I was worried after reading previous reviews. Parking was expensive but I had checked on that before hand so we parked directly across the street in a public parking garage and it cost us $30 for four days and since we hadn't planned on driving anywhere we chose to do that rather than valet with the hotel. They do not provide breakfast unless you pay for club level and we did not do that so I can't comment on the breakfast. They do have a restaurant on the main floor that offers a breakfast buffet but we didn't eat there but saw it as we were leaving one morning and it looked very nice. We did use the pool. The pool area was nice, like I said, it's a historic hotel and you can tell when your at the pool. It's small but quaint and cute. They provide towels for swimming and have a phone for you to order drinks from the bar. I do have a few complaints about the pool. In previous reviews people talked about it being dirty. I did not notice anything like that and I looked. But we were told it was a heated pool. After a couple of days of attempting to get in the pool since it was 95 degrees out I finally went and asked if the heater was broken. The pool was so cold that I could not stand to get in it and other people were having a hard time getting in and getting used to the cold temperature of the water. I was told that the heater was not broken and that it was heated to 81 degrees. Another thing was the hot tub. The hot tub was broken and that really bummed me out. It would have been really nice to relax in the hot tub and order a few drinks after spending the day walking around San Antonio. They also have a small museum down in the basement that was interesting. It tells you about the history of the building and they have an old school barber shop so the men can go get an old fashioned shave if they want. The location is awesome! No, it's not directly on the river but when you leave the hotel you can walk one block and be on the museum reach of the river or walk two blocks and be on the touristy part of the river. Also, the Magestic Theater is directly across the street. So if you are in town to see a show there this would be the place to stay. Also, we purchased a hop on/hop off city sightseeing pass and they come right by the Sheraton and will pick you up. While waiting for our bus one day we noticed that other similar companies drive right by there also. This was extremely convenient and allowed us to go see stuff without having to walk near as much. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel. Especially if the hot tub was working. I love historic buildings and the romance that comes with them. I truly enjoy thinking about how it used to be when they still used the mail system that is still there in between the two elevator shafts and going out to the pool and knowing that this was the best of the best 100 years ago. You can tell in the details of tile work and the fountain. Newer hotels do not pay attention to those kind of beautiful details. I can live with a slightly smaller room so I can enjoy the architecture and feel of a historic hotel. The staff was great too! I would stay here again but would probably call ahead and ask about the hot tub unless it was winter time. You just can't beat the uniqueness and the cleanliness and the staff along with the location for the price. You will save hundreds compared to a hotel directly on the river and don't really sacrifice anything to save the money. It was a wonderful and romantic weekend for us!!
"Majestic Queen"
Spend a week at this fabulous hotel taking in the sights of downtown San Antonio. The hotel is a gem and the service and location of this hotel is great. Can't say enough of this place. The bar is full of history as Teddy Roosevelt supposedly started the rough riders at this locale.
"Very comfortable stay"
A classic downtown San Antonio hotel that has undergone a facelift. Has lost some of its old charrm, but the upgrade makes it a better place to stay. Clean, comfortable room that looks newly renovated. Good bed. Good service.
"Wonderful stay!"
Stayed here a week while exploring the city and surrounding area. Perfect location to walk to any attraction in the downtown area. Right across the street from the Majestic Theatre and only a block to the River Walk. Also walking distance to the Alamo and Visitor Centre. We were pleasantly surprised to find that our room had been upgraded to the 10th floor upon arrival. We had booked two double beds but this room was larger and had two queen beds. Glad we were up higher as there is a lot of traffic noise. Ear plugs were provided and it wasn't too much of a problem as were up higher but I think it would have been pretty noisy on a lower floor. The room worked well for two friends traveling together as the shower and toilet were in one room and the sink and the mirror was separate. Also had a full length mirror with a plug in. Just easier when two women are getting ready at the same time. There was also two comfortable armchairs for watching TV.The beds were very comfortable as well. Free bottled water was provided daily. This was very much appreciated as we walked a lot and it was hot!!! There was also a fridge in the room. All in all very happy with the room we had. Great maid service and if you didn't want the room cleaned you just put a tag on the door and you received a five dollar voucher to be used in the hotel. Now on to the service we received.....EXCELLENT!!! I said to my friend that I felt like a movie star! I travel fairly often and have to say I have never been treated as well in any other hotel. Everyone we encountered had a smile and greeted us with a friendly hello. We ate in the restaurant several times. The breakfast buffet was excellent. There was a lot of variety and you could have an omelette custom made. A special thank you to Cynthia in the restaurant!!! She always had the biggest smile and would ask how our days had gone. We had mentioned we were going to the theatre and when she saw us the next day she asked if we had enjoyed the show. I would highly recommend this hotel if you are going to San Antonio!!
"Convenience"
Location wise, it's very convenient if your watching any show at the majestic theater next door. Rooms are comfortable except the bathroom which is positively tiny. The carpets look worn and unclean. There's a funny smell in the 7th floor hallways when we visited. Front desk very helpful. So is the valet. Good work to the staff. Especially to Erika, Gabe
and Mark.
"Great Hotel! Outstanding Concierge!"
The room is in the middle of all the action. Valet was quick and attentive.
The concierge was amazing. He took care of all our reservations and was very professional.
Room is huge and very well kept. Bar on First floor has a good vibe to it, with live music.
The pool was just ok, could use a cleaning, but plenty of chairs to lounge in.
"Conveniently located: A historic hotel with a modern touch"
Rooms were clean and with very comfortable beds. Excellent Wifi reception. The hotel is conveniently located in downtown San Antonio within walking distance of the Alamo and the River Walk where all the action is. Staff is attentive and very professional. This hotel is convenient for a wide variety of travellers.
"Good service, time for a reno."
Everyone was very friendly. The location is perfect. Staff goes out of their way to be helpful. Rooms were fine, but on the small side. Bathroom was very small - too small. But most importantly, it's past due for a renovation. This place needs an upgrade. I would stay here again, but would probably try another property downtown first.
"Classic Historic Hotel Two Blockes from the Riverwalk"
The Sheraton Gunter is a refurbished historic hotel in the heart of San Antonio. While it is not directly adjacent to the Riverwalk this can be a blessing. If you want the crowds at the Riverwalk you are just two blocks away. The Alamo is also an easy walk of less than a mile. There are great restaurants nearby but I prefer to reserve a Club Level room and take advantage of the afternoon reception and morning breakfast served there. This is still an old hotel so the fixtures are dated and not everything works perfectly but it remains my favorite hotel in San Antonio. Unlike my membership in Club Wyndham's facility, I always seem to get into the Sheraton Gunter.
"Historic beautiful, convenient downtown hotel"
My room was very spacious and extremely comfortable. Although there were some aspects of the room that were a little dated, that added to the ambiance of the hotel. I would definitely stay in this reasonably-priced (conference rate) hotel again.
"Tons of San Antonio History in this building"
The entire staff was friendly and outgoing. Guest rooms are small, but are original size to the early the 1900's. Some guest room doors were hard to close, which made it noisy in the hallways. I found a set of ear plugs in with my bathroom amenities, while my travel partners did not. The lobby decor is quite exquisite and very comfortable to relax in. The 414 Bar is cozy while overpriced on their drinks. I attended a Conference during this stay. The meeting facilities met our needs to a tee. The location is perfect for enjoying the Riverwalk area.
"Great Central Location - A good Sheraton"
This is one of Sheratons older properties but well cared for and with character, although to much so in the bathroom which is very dated. The Staff throughout are very very good. Good business hotel but welcoming to family travellers. Parking - valet only and expensive.
"Remember the Gunter! (And the Alamo)"
The staff from valet to housekeeping were all attentive, kind and eager to make my stay. a great one. This historic hotel (rumored to have some past spirits roaming its halls) while having all modern amenities, has kept its historic flavor and architecture. I had a room with a bay window that was spacious, comfortable and well appointed. My only wish was that Microwave and refrigerators were part of the room. I was, however, provided with a fridge upon request (I have meds that need refrigeration). Microwaves are not available. I was presenting (and participating) in an International Conference of Peer Supporters and the hotel did a fantastic job of managing our meeting rooms, the diverse guests and was there for our every need. There is a nice buffet for breakfast in the restaurant (13.95) and there are wonderful restaurants all along the street with amazing menus.
In the heart of San Antonio and less than a half block form the Riverwalk and about two blocks from the Alamo; this hotel is highly recommended to enjoy the old town richness of this historic city!
"From Gunter to Riverwalk a block of delicious sites"
I had a wonderful night, silent, although it's in the midst of the night life. Crossing the street, one can reach the Riverwalk and find a numerous number of nice restaurants and bars. The entrance is wide and beautiful. They were very polite.
"Excellent Service"
I'm a little behind but feel compelled to write a review. We were in San Antonio for a very important occasion and we booked the hotel last minute not knowing what to expect. The location was convenient to the river walk and all that we needed. The restaurant had great food and felt comfortable. The room was comfortable. But what really stood out was the service. We came into contact with some of the nicest hotel employees we have ever met. From the guy who brought our luggage up, to the restaurant wait staff to the front desk attendants - they were all friendly and helpful. Erica, in particular, made a huge difference in our stay. She knew exactly what to do and say to make us feel like we had a home base. She is truly amazing.
"Historic Hotel"
This hotel is right in the middle of downtown San Antonio. It was built in 1906 and has pictures and memorabilia throughout. You can walk to most places in town from here, such as the river walk and alamo. There are tons of restaurants along the river walk. They have a pool and dining area in the hotel. We ate breakfast there. The rooms are big and well kept. The beds are comfy. You can hear street noise but if the air conditioner is on, you cant. It is very humid in San Antonio! I would stay here again.
"Vacation"
Comfortable rooms, awesome bed!!! Met all our needs! Stayed here July 4-8th. The rooms were cleaned well. The staff was helpful and always courteous. I would definitely stay here again because it was close to the riverwalk, the Alamo, and Mi Tierra ( best MEXICAN restaurant)!!
